The Apples and Oranges session provided an interactive “boardgame” learning opportunity.

The 2025 Construction Leadership Institute wrapped up a transformative series this fall, bringing together emerging leaders from across the construction industry to refine their skills and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. Building on the momentum from the first three sessions, the cohort delved deeper into the practical and strategic aspects of running a successful construction business.

The latter half of the series focused on three critical areas. One session emphasized construction law, including labor law, construction liens, and contract law, equipping participants with the knowledge to navigate complex legal landscapes confidently. Another workshop, “Apples and Oranges” by Celemi, highlighted smart contract bidding, cash flow management, and the interdependence of departments in maintaining a profitable operation.

Safety was a key theme in the final session, where participants explored strategies for building a safety-focused culture. HRPro provided an essential rundown of the top ten things every business leader should know, ensuring participants left with actionable takeaways.

The series concluded with an exploration of AI in construction, prompting future leaders to consider how emerging technologies will shape their industry. The program culminated in a scenario-based role-playing workshop, challenging participants to apply lessons from all six sessions. Working in teams, they navigated complex situations that required critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership at every turn.

Kevin Buszka, foreman for Independence Commercial Construction, described the series as a revelation.

“The personality test from session one really opened my eyes. I realized how I’ve been interacting with my team in the past and how I can communicate better with different personalities. It’s changed the way I approach leadership both professionally and personally,” Buszka said.

Jack Hale, Vice President for EJH Construction, emphasized the importance of continuous leadership development.

“At every step, everyone needs ongoing leadership training. At the end of the day, we’re in the business of people. Maintaining respect for your team is essential so they can continue to grow and succeed,” Hale said. The 2025 CLI series has equipped its participants with the tools, insights, and confidence to lead their teams effectively, fostering a new generation of construction leaders ready to shape the future of the industry.
